I have been waiting for the winners to be announced ever since the contest was mentioned. I must say that by judging from the winners that you have chosen, the main and most important thing that you must have been looking for was only the quality of the songs submitted. You couldn’t have possibly been judging the songs themselves. In my opinion the only ones that were any good was the Cranston Foundation. That tune was very radio friendly. I’m sorry but the rest of them just made me and my friends (who are musicians by the way) cringe. We didn’t make it ourselves in time for the contest but I’m glad we didn’t waste our time doing a home recording cause only bands even if they sucked as long as it was pro recorded demo were considered. Sorry but thats my opinion. Oh and by the way none of these bands were garage bands that this contest could have helped get them started. All of them are all ready on their way. Disappointed!!
-sorry to hear that you and your musician friends are disappointed with the bands that were picked for Xposure. There were tons of great bands that submitted applications…but we did say that we wanted radio ready/quality recordings. we can’t play a fuzzy sounding track on the radio…and not only that who would want to buy the Xposure album with songs that they can barely hear the vocals in some and guitars too loud in others. sorry again you were disappointed.

So are we going to know what needs to go on the back of the cd cover as far as text goes?
-it will be the 5 bands and 3 of there songs…plus come logos
June 5th, 2007 at 6:42 pm
When we submit our entries for the CD Cover / Label contest, do we need to include anything on the BACK of the CD Cover? Or are you guys going to do that yourselves?
-we will need a back of the cd cover, but the artists track names and logos will need to go on there…so it is best not too make it too crazy.

WOW, dissapointed… how on earth did THE ROCKY FORTUNE not win??
June 5th, 2007 at 8:30 pm
Wow. I’m impressed. Weezy, pulling the race card is crap here – you know, I know it, the world knows it. It’s a shame that Calgary is as homogenous as it is – ridiculous, really – but it is, and especially among the music scene that fits X’s programming. The fact a woman placed among the winners is actually a huge surprise if you want pull the equality argument, especially here in the Texas of Canada. And Cujo. First this isn’t about glossy production and by the books song arrangements, you and your “musician” friends seem to value so highly; second your handle is a nickname of a hockey goalie, which, based on your comments about the songs being “cringe worthy” with the exception of the most radio friendly of the bunch makes me assume that you are in a generic rock band looking for a major label deal that will put you in that upper echelon of CanCon that includes, um, Theory of a Deadman and other such innovators. You go back to your formulaic, tired and dull bar rock. And for disclosure’s sake, I am in none of the bands.

Lots of great bands here! Someone has to say that. All of these bands have been paying their dues in the music scene, I’ve gone to their shows and they’re just as awesome live. Would love to see lonely hunters up there too, but otherwise, nice picks!
June 6th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
Wow, lots of angry people. I thought the choices were great… good on ya, X92.9!!!
June 6th, 2007 at 5:30 pm
I too was disappointed. Based on the songs I heard, I’d say 4 of the 5 bands have a long way to go before I would ever consider them ‘radio ready’. There must have been better bands than these, especially if there were over 100 entries.
June 7th, 2007 at 6:07 pm
Wow, bitter losers around here.
This isn’t cheap beer night with a battle of the bands. There’s more than what some band can crank out on a stage.
The choices were made. You can whine about it, or you can go practice for next year and other opportunities.
If every choice made was something we all agreed on, well, we’d be a boring lot of clones.
So how about supporting X and looking ahead to many, many years of Xposure on Tuesday nights, and CD contests every Spring?
People are so negative…

I’m not entirely surprised by a couple of the winners, or the criteria in place for selecting the winners. I’ve written (reviews and such) about Cranston Foundation and Hot Little Rocket for quite some time now and although they have been around for some time, they still are deserving of winning.
Sadly, with commercial radio, you have to showcase commercial music. Something like Gunther, who are phenomenal, will likely never ever get played on X92.9. Heck, you can barely get X to play non-radio singles from established artists that go beyond the standard formula. That’s just the reality, which sucks because I think commercial radio could do SO much better but hey, I’m not running the show.
One seriously problem that I’d like to see corrected is not just showcasing these local acts during a once a week show or twice daily at pre-determined specified time-slots. I’d like to hear these acts inserted into the rotation so that they could potentially be heard at any time of day or night. I’d say go even further and play some of the bands that didn’t win but whose recording quality and songs are appropriate for the radio inserted into normal rotation. I doubt that will happen but hey, prove me wrong!

As a member of one of these bands i must say that I am truly honoured to be represented by XFM. We didn’t expect to win and are really excited be paired up with some of Calgary’s great bands. I do feel a bit dismayed however because I don’t think Hot Little Rocket should have been picked based on a band members very close affiliation to the station. Not that they aren’t a great band. They’re quite excellent however I do feel that there is a strong conflict of interest here. As for some of the comments. You guys really gotta chill out. Music isn’t about how well you play your instrument its the heart and soul that you put into making it sing. A polished Slash guitar riff is boring nowadays. Gone are the Glam rock days where a 5 minute quitar solo would dominate precious airtime. If thats what your into turn the dial. Also, a lo-fi sound is a good thing. I’m not impressed by over produced crap. Its good to hear the room mics a bit and let that hiss sit on the tape even after mastering. I still call that radio friendly. Thanks again XFM. Happy to be on your roster, just don’t push out community radio or you’ll forever have an enemy.
June 13th, 2007 at 3:48 pm
Personally, I’d take a polished guitar solo over ‘lo-fi’ or the hiss of room mics any day of the week, but to each their own.
June 16th, 2007 at 7:09 am
You all need to chill out. Keep in mind that the majority of the sample content (with the exception of Jane Vain) on the bands myspace pages is old. It doesn’t compare to the mastered “radio ready” stuff sent to X929.
These are some quality local bands. I understand the anger and frustration exhibited by some of you and it is only natural in a situation like this. Just be confident that your music, whether picked up by X929 or not, still kicks some hardcore ass… and keep focussed on getting it out to the masses.

As a member of one of the bands who didn’t win, I seriously think people need to relax. The fact that x92.9 pays any attention at ALL to the local scene is a miracle in and of itself. The bands who won, won for a reason. LaTab, HLR and The Cranston Foundation have all worked incredibly hard at their crafts (not that the other bands haven’t, but I know these bands in particular). My band has shared the stage with HLR and LaTaB and I can attest to the fact that the individuals taking the prize money are great people who will put it to good use. They are serious about music, and while you won’t likely see a member of LaTaB busting out a fiery metal solo any time soon, their songwriting is enviable, and that’s all that matters.
Stop whining.
