One of the most talked about DJ’s on the European Club Circuit is a 65 year old from the UK named Ruth Flowers, aka Mamy Rock.

Flowers got behind the wheels of steel for the first time at her grandson’s birthday party at a club and has been hooked ever since. She’s in the studio with Aurelien Simon working on her first record.

Plastic Beach

600px-Gorillaz_Plastic_Beach.svgI’ve been in love with the Gorillaz since their debut album. I honestly have no idea why, because outside of the Gorillaz, I’ve never really had the time of day for Damon Albarn, through his work in Blur or The Good, The Bad & The Queen. I was also a never big fan of Tank Girl, the work Albarn’s collaborator and partner in crime, animator/artist Jaime Hewlett is most known for outside of the group.

There is just something so strange and so irresistible about Gorillaz.

Their latest, Plastic Beach,  set to be released on March 8th, is a weird, happy, slightly dreamy, yet very funky (in an early 90’s neon green type of way) concept album.

I’ve been steaming it all week on the Guardian’s website and I’m head over heels, just like their previous two efforts.

I’m not sure how the Albarns’ very English, brit-pop voice does it, but somehow it blends perfectly with the likes of Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womack, Mos Def, De La Soul, Lou Reed and Mick Jones & Paul Simonon from the Clash.

gorillaz-plastic-beachThe record could very well be the greatest concept album this side of The Wall. It seems to take a twisted yet almost-serious look at the impossibility of our plastic society, but doing it without a hard glance or angry gesture; all the while doing it to happy, dream like musical sequences.

Gorillaz has managed to take the incredible art form of the British imagination and take it to the next level. It follows in the footsteps of Alice In Wonderland, Mary Poppins and Harry Potter in creating a world entirely unto it’s own with it’s own customs and physics, that makes you think you can ALMOST run away to it.

Think about it as if the Bee Gees and A Tribe Called Quest got together to work on the soundtrack to an Endless Summer and  Bedknobs & Broomsticks mashup.

Here’s the debut single/video that we’re currently spinning here on X, called Stylo. Lynch first described it on air as sounding like a Bo Jackson jersey. And for some reason that makes a lot of sense.
