Here are some Beer myths we think should be put to rest:
Myth #1: Beer has more calories than a box of chocolate truffles: False
While any alcoholic drink carries calories or carbs, surprisingly beer is one of the better options on the list. With half the calories per ounce than wine, beer offers a generous portion with some of the lowest calories of any alcohol drink. See the chart below for common holiday comparisons. This holiday season, don’t be afraid to celebrate with a delicious all-natural Pilsner. P.S. A truffle is about 210 calories each.
Myth #2: Beer doesn’t belong in the kitchen: False
Craft beer was named the No.1 hottest trend in Canadian Restaurants by Restaurant Canada’s 2016 Canadian Chef Survey, surveying close to 500 professional chefs. Substitute wine for beer in cooking with this easy rule: when white wine is called, use lagers. When red wine is called, use dark ales. Check out hundreds of Steam Whistle inspired recipes here.
Myth #3: Beer is not as sophisticated as wine or spirits: False
Elevate your experience with the right glassware. Beer can be as nuanced as a subdued rosé or as bold as a robust red. Just like wine, the shape of a glass can help showcase and enhance the flavours and aromatics of your beer. The brilliants clarity of Steam Whistle’s Pilsner is best observed through glass, where you can watch the carbonation bubbles dancing. See recommended beer and glass combos here.
Myth #4: Beer has no place at the dining table: False
When planning your festive feast, remember that some of the most exotic cuisine in the world is traditionally served with beer (Japanese, Thai, Indian or Mexican). Pilsners cut the heat on spicy food, quench thirst after savory foods & resets the palate after fatty foods. Steam Whistle Pilsner’s balance of malty sweetness and hoppy bitterness refreshes the palate while not overwhelming the flavours of the food making it an ideal pairing.
Myth #5 – Beer is not for desserts: False.
Beer and dessert share more in common than you’d think. The roasted malts present in beer often contain chocolate, coffee and caramel notes making it an ideal pairing for the sweet stuff. Drinking an IPA? Pick a sweeter chocolate or add some spice to your dessert. Stay away from anything too bitter as it may compete with the hops on your taste buds. A delicious Pilsner helps to offset the sweetness of a rich ganache and the carbonation helps to wash the palate clean. Steam Whistle paired up with famed baker and chocolatier, Dufflet to create sumptuous Beer Ganache Truffles and Pretzel Beer Bites available here!
Myth #6 – Wine and cheese is the only way to be: False.
Rest assured that stunning cheese platter can be paired with your favourite beers. According to the Dairy Farmers of Canada, most cheese specialists agree that beer is a more natural pairing for cheese than wine. Cheese can bring out flavours in beer that weren’t there before. Try pairing your Steam Whistle Pilsner with a creamy havarti or ricotta. The Pilsner will highlight the rich buttery notes of the havarti while the carbonation cuts through the creamy texture. Or try an Imperial Stout with a delicious blue cheese. The sharpness in the blue cheese will bring out the caramel and fruit notes in the beer. Remember, the more intense the beer, the more intense the cheese needs to be.
