One of the ongoing storylines in our city right now is CalgaryNEXT. The proposed plan to replace the Saddledome, which lets face it, sucks. It’s old and because of physical restrictions gets skipped by a lot of major touring acts. In fact now that Edmonton is in their new rink and Detroit (yes the city that went bankrupt but can still et a new rink) is set to be in theirs by 2017, the ‘dome is the oldest rink in the NHL.
CalgaryNEXT was originally set to cost $900 Million and would go on the Western edge of downtown near the current greyhound bus depot. It was also supposed to provide a new fieldhouse and stadium for The Stamps. That was until a recent survey came out claiming the new CalgaryNEXT project would actually cost closer to $1.8 Billion. A lot of which needs to go to the environmental remediation that needs to be done in the area prior to building. Remediation that to be fair would have to be done eventually with or without a new rink.
Either way, this whole back and forth between the city and The Flames is just delaying the process of getting the rink underway more and more. That’s got Old Man Lynch angry. Very angry. So angry he has decided to come up with his own idea.
#CalgaryNEXT? More like #CalgaryNOW!
Lynch for Mayor? I’d vote for him.
