Thanks to 8 years of playing in different concert/jazz bands, I’ll have you know I’ve been around an orchestra or two… But nothing like this! Hot diggity daffodil they’re good. Their wardrobe could’ve used more sweater-vest though but that’s just me.
The Maestro for the evening had flown in from Norway the week before and started the performance with a quick explanation of what we’d be listening to for the 1 hour concert, before kicking into a really cool military style piece called “Finlandia“.
The whole one hour performance really swept you through a tonne of different feelings and emotions.. You started in this strong powerful military march before turning into a sweeping journey through mountains and villas before ultimately becoming a really beautiful love story! However, the hi-light of the night had to be guest pianist Conrad Tao.
By the way, he’s 21. *sigh* Yes. 21. All in all, it was a fantastic experience going to CPO’s Rush Hour. If you’re not sure if it may be your type of thing, the 1 hour set is a perfect amount of time for an introduction to the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.
